Workplace Safety – what can you do?

Aug 23, 2022

In recent years, the issue of workplace safety has moved increasingly further into the spotlight, in no small part thanks to the impact of COVID-19.

It seems that never before has it been so vital for health and safety managers to ensure the wellbeing of their workforce, so, what can you do to make sure that your workplace is as safe as it can be?

Assess the risks

Of course, proper risk assessments are part and parcel of creating a safe place for people to work. For example, electrical equipment should be tested regularly and work spaces should be regularly assessed for potential hazards.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) provides a whole list of factors which must be considered, in order to ensure workplace safety. One of these is comfortable conditions, such as reasonable working temperatures and good ventilation.

For many months, people were urged to work from home, where possible, in order to minimise the spread of the deadly virus. Now, however, thanks to the development of an immunisation, people are growing more resistant to the effects of COVID-19 and returning to the workplace.

The return to the workplace has brought with it an extra awareness of the need to breathe healthy air and this is where the installation of a building management system with a Smart Control layer can offer the reassurance that workforces are looking for by actually displaying the quality of the air you are breathing.

Building management system health benefits

An intelligent BMS can not only control the temperature of the air, but it can monitor it for air quality. This includes systems which monitor for a whole range of environmental gases – Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide and even Sulphur Dioxide. Most commercial properties and schools have an incumbent Building Management System (BMS) that these sensors could be added to, for added peace of mind.

In addition to the health benefits, It has long been thought that internal building air quality leads to better cognitive function and productivity.

There are many ‘off the shelf’ options that a client can utilise to monitor internal air quality and we can provide easy to install wireless solutions that can be added to any existing BMS system. This approach will allow you to identify problem areas within buildings, historically log the data and set poor air quality alarm notifications.

Bespoke building management systems

At Cube Controls, we utilise IoT connectivity to create bespoke BMS networks for buildings of all sizes. Having instant access to BMS data allows businesses to increase technical staff efficiency, improve building occupant comfort, and reduce their energy and carbon footprint.
