Within the BMS industry we are at the technical coal face with regard to experience with Smart HVAC or, more commonly known as Packaged Plant. It is our responsibility to integrate these products with other building systems and essentially bring them to life in a suitable way. While there is no doubt that this approach represents the future of HVAC, plant clients need to be made aware that it is not without it’s pitfalls. From a clients perspective these Smart HVAC products are thought of as a part of the overall BMS installation. The problem with this is that they also think that they can be made to function in anyway that is required by means to adapting the software. While this may work with BMS controlled plant these Smart devices are mostly running on fixed software that cannot be easily adapted. It is when a client wants to change how their building and HVAC plant operates that they have the realisation that the smart plant control is mostly set in stone and their requirements may not be totally possible.
