Improving the air that we breathe: the role of BMS in gyms

Apr 13, 2021

A simple truth: people go to a gym to improve their health. In the act of undertaking aerobic exercise, the cardio-respiratory system works together to get oxygen to the working muscles and to remove the carbon dioxide from our bodies. When exercising, our body needs more oxygen and produces more carbon dioxide. We breathe deeper and more often to facilitate the exchange of oxygen and CO2.

Consequently, a gym owner needs to ensure that the air that we breathe in a gym is recycled often and filtered, so our cardio-respiratory system can work efficiently. A BMS can help achieve this clean air in three ways, which we explore in detail here.

Air circulation

With so much oxygen being sucked in and so much CO2 respiration, the need for proper ventilation is high. A gym needs an air circulation system managed by its building management system to ensure efficient circulation of fresh air into the gym space. The other side of this coin for the Gym owner is energy usage. Running a ventilation plant can be expensive so you want your BMS to monitor occupancy levels of the various areas of the gym and only operate the ventilation to the appropriate levels.

If you are someone who goes to the gym, you want to know the environment is supporting your efforts. You need to breathe deeply and regularly and know you are taking in the oxygen required to make your muscles work.

Control sources of pollutants

In recent times, we have been regularly sterilising equipment in gyms, using chemicals to clear viruses that can be passed through touch. A gym may also have an indoor swimming pool, with the chlorine mix creating fumes that can travel through the building – not to mention the smell of sweaty bodies in close proximity.

Then, there is the dust and the pollutants that come from outside. Simple things like pollen getting into the gym area can cause discomfort for some members.

Therefore, an effective building management system is essential to monitor the filtering of the air and keep the air circulating. Air filtration systems do a good job of removing dust, pollen and most pollutants from the air. For those taking extra deep breaths in the gym environment, this is reassuring.

Manage air temperature

Exercise is hot work. A large number of people warmed up and radiating heat, as well as the ambient heat from everyday conditions, can quickly make the environment inhospitable to exercise. Therefore, a good BMS offering high-quality air conditioning control is a vital ingredient to the success of the gym and to the people looking to live a healthier and fitter lifestyle.

Here the BMS is more than just a sound decision, but an essential part of a gym’s financial health. There are few people that regularly subscribe to a gym where it is impossible to exercise for certain months of the year. Therefore, not only is the BMS improving the environmental condition but offering a return on their investment.
